I served as an Ordinary Seaman on the Prince of Wales from Feb 1941 to Aug 1941 to secure 6 months
sea time prior to achieving a commission. I was in 'A' turret magazine during the Bismarck battle and went to Placentia Bay in Newfoundland when Churchill met Roosevelt. I with John Binch, another candidate, rowed Churchill ashore to stretch his legs. I served as a Lieut. RNVR for three years on HMS Verdun doing East Coast convoys. Mentioned in dispatches 1944. Then did a staff course at RN Staff College, Greenwich. Demobilised 1946. Am now 89 years old. |
