Ion Beauchamp Butler Tower was a son of Francis Fitzpatrick Tower and Laura Tower, Brother of Vice Adm Sir Francis Thomas Butler Tower, and Husband of Sophie Maude Tower, of Banbury, Oxfordshire.

As a Lieutenant Commander he served on HMS Repulse as Executive Officer from 17th December 1926 to July 1927.
